According to official customs data from most countries in the world, global wine exports to African markets have experienced remarkable growth over the past eight years. Overall, there has been a 43% increase in the value of these exports between 2017 and the 12-month figure at October 2025, while the volume has risen by 21%. These numbers have been adjusted by Del Rey AWM to account for inconsistencies in the official data reported by several countries, as well as re-exports from Togo and Ghana. The significant rise in export value is largely attributed to the substantial revaluation of wine exports, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic

Wines with a Protected Denomination of Origin (PDO) have been at the forefront of the decline in international sales from EU countries in recent years. This decrease is evident both in absolute figures and in relative terms, affecting revenues measured in euros and quantities in litres.
Despite notable differences among the various wine-producing countries within the EU, official figures analysed by Del Rey AWM confirm that PDO wines comprise the majority of EU exports of still bottled wines. In comparison, wines with a Protected Geographic Indication (PGI), varie-tals, and wines lacking any quality indication represent smaller shares of these exports

Official data analysed by Del Rey AWM highlights that the United States experienced the most pronounced drop in wine exports among the world’s leading exporters during the first three quarters of 2025. In terms of monetary value, US wine exports fell by 31.4%, translating to a loss of $300 million and bringing total export earnings down to $655.3 million for the period.

World exports of wines in bulk during the first
semester of this year have remained quite stable in value, with decrease of volume by 2.3% almost compensated by prices increasing by 2.1%l. Comparing figures of the semester with those for the latest 12 months, trends seem to be deteriorating: similar decrease in volume faces now slower growth of average prices, that
makes revenues turning to red figures.
A report prepared for the WBWE November 2025. where more figures and trends will be analaysed. More information at WBWE.

Wine shipped in bulk accounts for around one third of total trade in volume and it is unexpectedly increasing. But there are different types of wine bulk trade, as shown by a price range that goes from less than 50 cents of Euro per litre to more than €2.50.
Different producers sell different types of wine in bulk to different markets for different purposes. Spain leads the category, particularly since the change in EU regulation in 2009 that eliminated subsidies to regular distillation. And the future may be very different from now, depending on the strategy to be followed by the most relevant actors.

Sparkling wine leads world trade, despite slowing in 2024, particularly in value terms. France, Italy and Spain account for the vast majority of sales. However, the evolution of each of these actors differ.
The presentation given by Del Rey AWM at Geisenheim University in June this year reveals the key characteristics and recent evolution of this category, showing those differences among major producers and markets, from which some interesting conclusions may be infered.

International wine markets showed great stability in 2024 which may be interpreted as good news, after sharp decline the year earlier.
Withing this framework, Spain presents good opportunities to improved wine sales both at the domestic as well as in international markets, due to its large potential for adaptation to market changes. The key - as the Italian case shows - is getting closer to the market in order to (i) follow very carefully their major trends and (ii) improve comercial networks.
This presentation was made at the 2025 Conference of the European Association of Wine Economists (EuAWE), held in Zaragoza on May 15.
